I don’t' update often...but I’ll try.
I just got out of Consumer Behaviour...one of my required marketing courses for my final...and well well well....i must say, the more i do in this field..the more i get pissed off. Not just because the material is dry and boring (cause i hate that too) but i basically learn how to deceive people and influence them to buy products… I know that’s the point.. but that’s what gets to me. Today we talked about Promotional Philanthropy.. what a sick fucking subject. We watched a video on how major corporations use this term to do shameless self promotion and find cheap ways to plug the corporation. My good god… the guy who came up with this idea is one smart motherfucker…and one rich mother fucker.. but what a bastard eh? The example case study that we looked at was Hudson Bay Company… they started up a new chain of stores that sells outdoor equipment and whatnots… called HBC somethigorother.. and what they do is give to the charitable organization known as ‘Trails” which gives youth the chance to do outdoorsy shit…. Well the ‘underprivileged’ youth that is.. Well… the company had a contest or something along those lines… in which.. for every HBC shirt that a popular television personality wore during the news or the weather or something.. the company would donate 100 bones to the charity.. Nice idea… but I have a feeling that the corporations main concern is not the children… they just get cheap advertising.. and it gives them a good image in the eyes of the unknowing consumer.. smart marketing.. .. yeah…right..
We got to check out a commercial for AT&T that had dying children in third world countries for the whole commercial.. and Sarah McLaughlin’s ‘I will remember you’ song playing in the background.. and just listen to this plug “for every phone call you make… some percentage (I can’t remember how much) will go towards these sick and dying kids (not in exact words.. but my point gets across) .. and they go on to actually say. “ Make more phone calls!... or these kids will die (also not exact words.. but honestly.. it’s what they pretty much said… the ‘make more calls’ part is the exact words) So it’s not so much that that they’re plugging themselves by using these charities …but now they’re actually trying to make you feel guilty if you fucking don’t buy the products … or in this case… make more long distance calls… sure carrot top annoys the fuck outta me too. .. but I’d rather see his dumb ass than a bunch of dying kids… (I know, those two are different companies…but same fucking thing) I never really noticed it… but it’s everywhere.. Tim Hortons camp day stuff… sure.. it’s good for the charities and all.. but why do they have to promote themselves so much in the process.. just be an ‘angel donator’ or someshit.. I don’t even know if that’s the term.. but I took it from ‘angel investors, which are individuals or corporations that invest in other businesses to get them off the ground and all… but they remain completely unanimous… but than again… have your Not for profit organization on every McDonalds commercial is a great way to plug the charity… so maybe i should rethink this.. they do help out.. and it’s good for both fucking sides… but don’t’ call it what it ain’t… it’s PROMOTIONAL Philanthropy.. not just philanthropy.. as the corporation calls it.. they leave out the Promotional part..
Some reporter in this video (and what a fucking laugh he was ) was talking to the head person for the charity stuff for HBC…like the HBC representative…and this reporter was a sarcastic … ‘get in your face’ type fella, and he kept on saying “yeah it’s a good thing… but doesn’t the cheap advertising come into play with your decisions…? “ and the HBC missy would say “oh god no… not at all” .. so he says “than just cut them a check and leave the promotion outta it” .. hahaha. She was like “uhh…ummm…well……..” yeah… he won. Haha. That’s my point.. I have to agree with this guy.
So that’s my hardly coherent rant after class just than… and my overall point is.. (if you can call it a point) Don’t call something just philanthropy if it’s not just fucking philanthropy…. But if they did call it promotional philanthropy ..than they wouldn’t come out looking as good would they..
I can’t wait for fourth year…when I really learn how to fuck the consumer in the ass. Hahaha.
